Former USC Defensive Coordinator Monte Kiffin, father of coach Lane Kiffin, has left the University of Southern California and their storied college football program there to take over the vacancy at defensive coordinator for the Dallas Cowboys. Kiffin takes over a defense that had started to jell under Rob Ryan, who was fired for reasons that Jerry Jones specified and attempted to justify a couple of weeks ago. This change comes with more changes in the assistant coaching staff, as well as the defensive scheme the Cowboys intend to use.
Dallas has used the 3-4 defense for the last couple of years and now switches to the 4-3. This emphasizes speed and flexibility in the linebackers, as well as long defensive ends who can rush the passer. This changes the scouting philosophy and the roles of the current players the Cowboys have now. Some will not have trouble adjusting, but the draft could spell changes along the front seven of the Cowboys defense. Stay tuned for more Cowboys news, as more roster and coaching changes take place this offseason.
